There are hundreds of search engines and directories out there, some are more known than
others, they all work a little differently. Newsgroups are a great way to find the
information you are looking for or to find people with the same interests. Search engines
made just for kids is another great way for your kids to get around on the web. On this
page you will find links to get you started.
Search Engines and Directories for Children
& Families
Ask Jeeves for Kids - Allows you to ask a question in
plain English and, after interacting with you to confirm the question, Ask Jeeves for Kids
takes you to one and only one web site that answers your question. |
| Yahooligans - Sites
are hand-picked to be appropriate for children. Also, unlike normal Yahoo, searches will
not be forwarded to Yahoo's search engine partner Inktomi if there is no match from within
the Yahooligan listings. This prevents possibly objectionable sites from slipping onto the
screen. Additionally, adult-oriented banner advertising will not appear within the
service. |

Search Engines/Directories
Yahoo.com - I know, I know, you all
know about Yahoo, you've all been there, but I can't list all the other directories and
engines without listing good old Yahoo. Have you been Yahooing lately?Ask Jeeves - Same as above but for the general

| AltaVista - AltaVista is run by
Compaq and has gained wide-spread name recognition. |
| Excite - Launched in late 1995, owns
both Magellan and WebCrawler (also search engines). They run as separate services. |
| InfoSeek - Around since early 1995.
Infoseek also runs a directory separate from its search engine. Sites are listed by topic,
and editors pick which sites appear. |
| LookSmart - LookSmart launched in
Oct. 1996. It is the closest rival Yahoo has, in terms of a human-compiled directory. It
listed about 300,000 web sites as of Feb. 1998. |
| Lycos - Around since May 1994, Lycos
is one of the oldest of the major search engines. It began as a project at Carnegie Mellon
University. The name Lycos comes from the Latin for "wolf spider." |
| Snap - Another Cnet
site. It launched in late 1997. |
| Northern Lights - Classifies
documents by topic. Also has has a collection of documents not accessible to search engine
spiders. You can search for the documents for free but there is a charge to view them. |
| Non-Profit Search Engines/Directories IdeaList - If you need help finding nonprofit or
volunteering resources on the Web this is an excellent resource with information provided
by 16,000 organizations in 130 countries. |
